In the name of art...

So a few weeks ago with February vacation looming large I decided I would plan some art projects to do over vacation.  I went out and got library books on the subject, got ideas from blogs, and went out to get my supplies.  I knew it had to be varied in length and difficulty but ultimately I wanted something all the boys could do together.  Usually our vacations of packed full of outings to "special" places and playdates (sometimes two a day) but I wanted a more low-key vacation, especially given I needed to continue and finish my writing project this week.  The main reason for the art projects too is because it's something Ben loves to do.  Cal and Seth will sit in the playroom and play cards and board games with me all day long but not Ben.  He only wants to color and create.  I got them some story cubes as a "game" they could both play.  Cal could write the story and Ben could illustrate.  That's been fun.  Here are some other things we've been up to...

Ok so the first picture the kids did not create.  Eric and I went to this new place in Portsmouth called Art with a Splash.  You bring your own beverage to enjoy while an artist takes you step by step to paint the piece of the night - Seagull on a Post - for us.  It was fun!  We went with another couple and we were the only ones there.  Everyone was surprised at how well they all turned out!

Can you guess who painted which?

The abstract fish were a lot of fun.  We had to do it in two parts.  I cut out the fish making notches around the edges.  The first day the boys just painted them.  The next day when they were dry we added the patterned paper and the googly eye.  For the final step we wrapped string around the fish securing them in the notches.  They came out really neat!

The pig was a simple one.  Bought them for 80 cents each at Michaels.  I'd say it took them a good 15-20 mins to complete.  Great for something you can just pick up at the store and no mess!  Well aside from the tiny white backings to all those squares.

Below are our salt dough ornaments.  We used Easter cookie cutters to make fun bunny, duck, egg shapes and more.  We cut them out and baked them on a different day and finally got around to painting them today.  So glad I bought the new paint palettes so they can each have their own and have all the colors!

It ended up being a great week to have planned projects.  On Monday we spent the whole afternoon taking Seth to the doctor for a fever and a cough, which turned into going to the hospital for chest x-rays, and then back to the doctor's office for the results.  He didn't have pneumonia but we had to sit in the office for 20 mins while he got a nebulizer treatment to see if it helped.  It did so we went home with the machine to do our own 3 times a day.  We've been mostly house bound and a huge snow storm cancelled all our plans today too!  Not long before vacation is over!

Plus I'm super happy to report that I reached my 50,000 word goal today!!!  I was able to do it in 30 days!
