Bitter Sweet

The last hurrah before school! PJ Day and goofing around with Hurricane Irene as the backdrop!

Aren't these face paintings cute? A lady came to one of Cal's tennis lessons in the neighborhood a couple weeks ago and did it for free for all the kids! She wanted some practice before she charged at a fair. It'd say she's ready!!

What?! A kitty!! In our house?! Yup, it's true....

Welcome Jules!!

Jules does not actually live with us. She's part of the extended family and lives with my mom but is technically speaking, my cat!! This is actually a funny story....My mom was searching for a kitten and couldn't find one near her. So I thought, what a great idea! We'll take up an afternoon playing with the kitties at the SPCA here in NH. I tell the kids and off we go. Little did I know that to actually PLAY with the kittens there you have to fill out an application. Ok, no big deal, so I do, pretending, naturally, that it will be our kitten. Allergies to cats it asks? No. (Eric and I are both highly allergic). So, the girl asks when I hand in my form, "Why do you want a kitten?" With no planned response, I was dumbstruck for a second before I noticed I had to put down that we have a dog and I so I said, "As a playmate for the dog!" It worked...she smiled and seemed pleased. Phew! Even though I'd called ahead of time, the 5 kittens that were available an hour before were now down to two! They were both male and all gray and not that cute. I had somewhat mentioned wanting a girl and she didn't want to subject the kittens to "undue stress" if we didn't actually want them. So she said there were 10 kittens out back for an apopt-a-thon at the mall tomorrow and she would go back and see if she could find one for us. She brings out this cute gray guy and we go in the room with it to play. After about 5 mins, I'm in trouble, my eyes are starting to itch, my nose is running, a coulpe sneezes and I just said I WAS NOT allergic to this cat. The kitty was too timid anyway so I quickly gave him back and with approved application in hand rushed out with a "we'll just come to the adopt-a-thon tomorrow" excuse. It was super busy, I'm sure they hardly noticed my imminent allergy attack.

So we go home and call Grammy and tell her she better come up and pick out her own kitten the next day. We get to the mall early ready for swarms so we can get the first pick of the litter, so to speak. Within 10 mins we've got our cat and we're filling out the remaining paperwork under MY name since I already have the approval (no sense in wasting time). Well the lady that is the spokesperson for the mall is thrilled to have the first adoption done in 15 minutes and asks us for a picture!! Yikes! This cat isn't even mine!! Not even that, but the girl tells me I'm not allowed to give it away!! HA! She says if for any reason we can't keep the cat we HAVE to give it back to the SPCA. Well, hopefully they don't come knocking on my door for a visit :) I agreed to let the boys be photographed with Jules (formerly named Koala) but have yet to see it in the paper like the lady said it would be. Probably a good thing so I don't have to explain to all my neighbors that I don't actually have a cat! We have since discovered that Cal is a cat person at heart. He took to the cat more than he ever has with the dog. When asked, Ben and Seth still agree that Pip is better though.

Cal's crazy fangs and big front teeth!

School starts on Wednesday for Cal! Can't believe it's already here. This is always a bittersweet day for me. While I'm psyched for them to be going, don't get me wrong, I always feel bad that "the brothers" will be separated for so much of the day. The good news is everyone is so excited for school to start and are literally counting down the days (Sept 12th for Ben, Sept 21st for Seth). It never seems to dawn on them that they'll be apart until they are and we go through a little bit of a withdrawal/adjustment period. Cal literally cried the other day because Ben was CHOOSING not to play with him. Seriously. But hopefully this year with everyone having somewhere to go at least for a few hours, it won't be too bad.

Ok, I should post this before hurricane (or tropical storm really) Irene takes out my power again! Happy storm!
